Salty Saturday - King Tide Salt Fly Mid Season Report
The Bay of Plenty has seen one of the longest settled periods in a long time. This has made flats fishing conditions near on perfect with great sun and an often light breeze to take the shine off the water’s surface. What also needs to be taken into account currently are the water temps. Seeking cooler water is a must as the activity on the flats is a bit sluggish at certain times and tides during warmer weather.
We’ve had a real mixed bag of fishing, sometimes with feverish response to flies and other times a total distain for the more realistic flies in your arsenal tied to lighter, longer leaders.
We have been spending a little time out in the bluewater of late as it’s not too far from shore currently. Pelagics are feeding hard and have arrived in solid numbers, plus the usual bread and butter species are back on the chew after a lot of pressure over the summer break.
The next few months always fish exceptionally well. Hopefully more of these fantastic weather patterns continue as it will make for some brilliant fishing.
