Manic Monday - Matt Butler in Aitutaki

Traveltruly Presents: Land of bones - Aitutaki Fly Fishing from Traveltruly on Vimeo.

"The trout fishing season had wound up in New Zealand so I decided to jump on a plane and try my first go at some decent saltwater fly action. Aitutaki was the destination due to its proximity to NZ and its famous bone fishing. I arrived to some horrendous winds that persevered for the 6 of my 7 days on the island and although I got out in the water on foot everyday I was not having any success due to the huge swells. On my last day, prior to flying out that night I finally got out with Itu Davey, a local guide who really knows his stuff and his family has been chosen down Aitutaki bonefish for generations. We started the day with a massive GT which was on my bucket list and gave me hell! Then it was then onto landing seven bones in amongst a couple more GT's as a few other species. It was an epic way to wrap up the trip and if it wasnt for Itu and Rua my trip would have been a massive disappointment. If your planning a trip to Aituaki you can contact Itu here: e2sway.com

I would like to say a big thanks to Tim Angeli for tying me up all the bonefish and GT flies I needed for the trip, boy did they work! Also like to thank guys at Manic Tackle Project for hooking me up with a rod for the trip. The 8wt Scott rod paired with this reel was a beast and combated the wind and powerful bonefish with ease whilst still maintaining good feel. I also tried out the Hatch fluorocarbon tippet which worked a treat, the fish were happy to take and I didn't get any bonefish break offs!
