AIRFLO SUPERFLO RIDGE 2.0 SUPER TROUT FLYLINE REVIEW
Want to win drinks of the hoppy type from your mates in a carpark distance casting bet? Then this could be the line for you!
Last year I decided to undertake the necessary practice to take the extensive and in-depth test to obtain my Certified Casting Instructor (CCI) certification through the Fly Fishers International (FFI).
With a list of gear from Matt Tripet of The Fly Program, an already certified badass casting guru, I dropped into the local Boss Outdoors Canberra store and spoke to Nath Walker (also a certified casting gun). Nath immediately reached for the orange version of the new Airflo Superflo Ridge 2.0 Super Trout fly line and explained this is the ideal line. Being fluro orange ensures the assessors can easily see the loop shapes you are forming, but also, when it comes to teaching students are able to easily see what instructors are on about.
A few months of consistent trips to the oval with the Super Trout strung up to the Primal RAW CCC, and I was sold… completely.
Fast forward a few months and I notice that there is a driftwood coloured version of the very same fly line. Perfect I thought - I have enjoyed casting the orange comp coloured line so much, this ‘more fish friendly’ coloured line would be great for the lake, where on occasions a longer cast is needed to cover more water. With a 70ft total head length, getting the fly back out to eager trout is a breeze. Coming in at a total of 120ft, this is a really long fly line… you’ll most likely need to cut back on the backing.
The Ridge 2.0 technology helps when it comes to ensuring your line travels through the guides smoothly and without knots or tangles. It has no issues when it comes to turning over some bigger streamers, and the extra long belly (just shy of 30ft) helps the angler control long lengths of line in the air and punch line into the wind… something that always seems to be prevalent on the NSW alpine lakes. Roll casts feel fantastic and extend beautifully on this line as well.
It may not be for everyone, especially those who exclusively fish rivers where long casts may cause more problems – tree fish anyone? But if you’re after a fly line that sails smoothly out of the rod tip, has incredible aerial mending ability and if you're so inclined, win some car park bragging rights, then this is the line for you.
Available in Fire Orange WF5F – 6F for practice & teaching casting, as well as parking lot show offs.
